SONOSPHERE

SONOSPHERE is an interactive website that transforms Spotify listening behavior into a personalized world that users can explore. By analyzing patterns in listening habits, it generates a unique environment that reflects each user's musical identity.

Overview

SONOSPHERE explores how the data generated through everyday apps can reveal meaningful truths about our lives. Using Spotify as a source, the project transforms listening behavior into a personalized, explorable world that visualizes patterns in music and identity.

By making personal data more tangible and interactive, SONOSPHERE encourages users to better understand and connect with the digital traces they create every day.

Users can navigate this world through hand movement in real time.

Users can navigate this world through hand movements in front of their device's camera. By connecting the body with personal data, SONOSPHERE transforms abstract information into a tangible experience, encouraging users to engage with and take ownership of the data they generate.

Rather than presenting raw Spotify statistics, SONOSPHERE interprets patterns in song repetition, artist diversity, listening routines, and playlist curation.

These behaviors are translated into personas that make complex data easier to understand, transforming listening habits into narratives that reveal different aspects of a user's musical identity.

Through a custom algorithm, users are assigned 4 personas from a system of 19 possible personas, with one persona representing each listening category. Represented as icons, these personas visualize different categories of listening behavior and identity.

For example, users can view song titles that are currently in rotation and simple explanations of what their assigned personas reveal about their musical identity.

Each user's Spotify data generates a distinct world shaped by their four personas. As listening habits evolve over time, the personas and environment evolve alongside them, creating a living reflection of each user's relationship with music.

To make the system behind each persona transparent and understandable, SONOSPHERE is accompanied by a publication and persona guide documenting the project's research, persona frameworks, and algorithmic logic, revealing how listening patterns are translated into personas and visual identities.
